Informal presentation of about 20-25 minutes followed by a discussion. The presentation could be a proper short focused talk or just a few slides with mainly figures, or just at the white-board with a pen. The content could be some new results/ideas related to past, on-going or future projects in extragalactic astrophysics. If you have visitors, please ask them to participate and give a presentation - they should have priority over presentation by 'local' people! • 30 March 2010 - Antoine Llebaria (LAM): "Restitution of multiple overlaid components on extremely long series of solar corona images" Summary: This talk will describe the methods used to accurately disentangle the components observed on the set of solar corona images provided during 12 years by the LASCO-C2 coronographs. Based on the specific temporal and spatial characteristics of each component we have been able to disentangle on this 3D set of data, the K-corona (due to coronal electrons by Thompson effect ), the F-corona (due to interplanetary dust by Mie scattering) and the stray light (due to the instrument itself). Some astrophysical consequences of results must be briefly discussed.
  • 20 April 2010 - Christophe Adami (LAM): "The DAFT/FADA Survey: Status and Early Results from First Epoch Data"
  • 4 May 2010 - Ron Buta (Alabama): "Galaxy Morphology and Classification in the Mid-Infrared from S4G" The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G, Sheth et al. 2010) is a comprehensive survey of 2,331 galaxies in the 3.6 and 4.5 micron IRAC bands of the Spitzer Space Telescope. One of the goals of the project is the derivation of RC3-like parameters of galaxies in the mid-IR, including galaxy morphology as interpreted in the framework of the de Vaucouleurs revised Hubble-Sandage classification system. The IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands are sensitive mainly to the older stellar component, and provide the most dust-penetrated views of all types of galaxies. This penetration of dust can cause drastic changes in appearance between blue and mid-IR images. Nevertheless, these are the exception. The subtleties of blue light galaxy morphology carry well enough into the mid-IR 3.6 micron band that for many galaxies, the blue and 3.6 micron morphologies are similar. I will describe a detailed morphological study of a subset of 200 galaxies based on archival 3.6 micron Spitzer images that have been processed through the S4G pipeline.
  • 18 May 2010 - Benjamin Gardes (LAM): "Photometric calibration of the LASCO-C2 coronograph for solar sytem objects" In this demostration I will introduce you the method to determine the photometric calibration of the LASCO-C2 coronograph images for solar system objects based on the extensive analysis of all stars down to the magnitude V = 8 that have transited in its field-of-view since the past 14 years (1996-2009). An automatic procedure has been developed to detect those stars and to measure their magnitudes providing statistics for more than 250 000 images. Using 4 different aperture windows I have first estimated the Zero Points of the photometric transformation between LASCO-C2 magnitudes for the Orange filter and standard V magnitudes and then derived the calibration factor for the surface photometry of extended sources. Finally, we will see how the sensitivity of the instrument behaves along the mission.
